Sunny Days Lead to Flushing

This past weekend my husband and I took my mother in law to Flushing, Queens for a little road trip.  It's been a while since we've driven there, so we took advantage of the beautiful weather (despite super allergies).  We always debate whether or not to try a new Korean barbecue restaurant, but no matter what we end up at the same place; small and quaint but the food is consistently delicious.
Getting the grill ready and some of the side dishes.
The usual kim chi side dish.  Cannot be missed.
After our (huge) meal, we decided to walk a few blocks to see some of the shops and restaurants in the area.  Definitely a good way to wake up.  When we thought we were "up to here" with food, we stumbled upon a little cute Korean bakery that had an overwhelming amount of pastries, breads, cakes, and donuts galore.  It was way too good to pass up.
Me with my tray
Danishes and donuts
Not sure what they are, but they're cute and tiny and look decadent.
Gluten free treats dripped in chocolate
Can't resist some chocolate bread
A box full of treats
After gawking at all of the pastries and goodies at the bakery, we bought a few (ok, a box full) to take home to try.  We then went to the Korean grocery store where my mother in law bought her groceries that she wouldn't be able to easily find back home.
With the trunk full of groceries and pastries, we headed back to Connecticut...and traffic. Yay.
All in a day's trip to (Queens) New York.

Six Hours of Traffic

You heard that right.  I was in six hours of traffic; three hours to and from NYC last week.  Six hours of crawling down the  highway, stop and go, and dodging crazy drivers.  It was worth it though since I had the chance to go to the Rachael Ray Show with my cousin.  With hopes of getting a great giveaway from the show, we practically ran to the studio a few minutes before they closed the doors.  We barely made it.  Then, we were there...waiting to get in with other audience members.  Unfortunately no photos were allowed at all once we were in the studio.

Being part of a studio audience is hard work.  There's a lot of cues to follow: applaud enthusiastically,  oohs,  awwws, ahhhs, chuckle, and of course smile since we never know when the camera will be scanning the crowd.  Plus, seeing Dr. Ian Smith show how much sugar is in a lot of our favorite drinks was interesting.  Christina Krumsick was on and showed two different no bake desserts...and we were all given her newly published book as well!  Can't wait to try some of the sweet treats from the book.
Well, after the show and visiting my cousin's little ones, I drove back to Connecticut a little after rush hour began.  Yay me.  Three hours of traffic, "why did I drive today" and "I should've taken the train". Next time, I will probably listen to those who advise me to take Metro North.

Two Sides of Queens

A few weekends ago, my husband and I brought my MIL to Kennedy Airport in Queens.  We thought this was a great opportunity to spend some time in Korea Town where we had lunch and did some grocery shopping.  First of all, the weather was being very odd.  We thought that it would only rain, but turns out that a tornado or water spout landed in Brooklyn that day the same time we were there.  We didn't see anything that resembled a swirling funnel, but from my pictures we should have known at the time that something was brewing.
The sun peeking through.
Something's brewing.
Whitestone Bridge on the way to JFK.

If you've seen my older post about K-Town, you'll know what kind of trip it is...a lot of eating.  Usually we take the trip with my MIL, however this time it was just hubby and I.  The food was quite overwhelming, more than usual.  We still managed to clear up most of it, though.

Several side dishes that went along with our barbecue.
After our trip to the grocery store and picked up some mochi, Korean Doritos (hubby HAD to get them), cucumber kimchi, and other Korean condiments we were prepared to head back home.  We somehow missed a turn to get on the highway and were headed toward the other end of Queens, NY.  As a last minute change we decided to go to Woodside where there's a small section of Filipino restaurants and bakeries.  We've never been so we thought, might as well go!  Plus, it was perfect timing because I was craving for a dessert.

Jollibee is a common fast food chain in the Philippines and is finally in the East Coast!
What a great road trip!  Do you like going for a drive?  Taking a map and just saying "I'm going there today"?

Week In Pictures 19.0 NYC

Snapshots of a memorable weekend in NYC with college friends for this week's WIP.  It's been three years since we all were together.  We traveled from three different states, and even though it was only a little more than twenty four hours - we still managed to take in as much as we can of New York and make more memories where we can say "remember when..?".  Note to self: wear better shoes next time - ouch.
Grand Central Station

Rockefeller Center

Brunch at Lexington Brass started with mimosas and bellinis which went along well with a burger and a side of truffle oil fries / Dinner at Sushi Samba Seven was amazing with out of this world tapas style dinner, a pitcher of caipirinha, sushi, and great music / Yummy omelet and rich dark coffee at The National.

The Chrysler Building was always close by / Passed by the Philippine Consulate - represent / Did some window shopping and scoped out the sales at Zara and Joe Fresh / Just our luck - a street fair!

How was your week?

Day Trip to Korea Town

If you've been reading my posts, you know that I love day trips.  Just getting away for the day.  Eating good food.  Getting stuff that I would not normally get back home.  You're probably thinking that all I do is eat and go to Asian stores, huh? Well, that's ok.  We indulged a little bit at Korea Town in Queens, New York.  It's not often that we go there so a little indulgence was lovely.  Sorry for the photo heavy post.  I love taking pictures of food!

We first went to a familiar Korean Barbecue restaurant.  There were so many to pick from in this particular neighborhood.  We had been there before a year or two ago and it was right across the street from the market.  I remember lots of food.  When the lady started to bring everything on to the table, I started to remember how good it was.  It was tough not being able to eat right away, making sure that I had a picture of everything.  I definitely looked like a tourist.  There were more than ten banchans or side dishes besides the main meal, which was beef barbecue (galbi) and the appetizers dumplings (mandoo) and seafood pancake (haemul pajeon).  Mostly everything was eaten with regular white rice and "purple rice" (heuk mee bap).
After our HUGE meal, we walked it off at the market across the street.  It was everything and mostly Korean food and products.  Something that we don't see often back home, especially a store that size.  My mother in law was armed with her list of groceries, my husband and I just walked around in awe because it's been a while since we had been there.  We asked each other, "do we need this?" or "should we get this?" a few times.  Remember when I posted rice cakes from the other Asian market? Well, this place had trays and trays of various rice cakes.  Some plain, flavored, mixed with pumpkin, red beans...just too many.  My favorite aisle is the snack aisle, where they have honey twists.  Oh man.  Then, there's the prepared food section where there's refrigerator displays of all the different kinds of kimchi, prepared side dishes, ready made soups, and of course Korean sushi (kim bap).  At the end of the leg of our grocery trip, we discovered a new addition in the store that we've never seen.  A steamed bun shop right in the middle of the frozen food section!!! Whoa!  Right next to the frozen mochi ice cream and the honeydew pops was a four walled glass structure, where inside there were about 5 people making steamed buns and two others working the front of the shop all working amazingly fast in a small space.  It was amazing to see how they made these snacks.  There were red bean, kimchi, pork, curry, and vegetable steamed bun to pick from.
After our shopping trip, we ended up in a little cafe close by.  I remember having a dessert there that had shaved ice, rice cakes (mochi), and assorted fruits.  When I asked the lady over the counter for one, she said it wasn't the season for it yet and that they usually make them during the summer months.  Boo!  So I sadly ordered a mocha bubble tea instead.  Since I didn't get my special Korean dessert during this trip, I guess there will be a next time in a few months!

Weekend Birthdays and Banana Wontons

Going to New York City is always a good time.
Since it was a beautiful day for a drive, it was even better.
There's so many places to check out in the city, but I haven't really had the
chance to explore that much of it.  It's all good.  There's always next time!
Da Bridge...George Washington Bridge
Chelsea Piers
Chelsea - West Siiiiiiide
Have to get some hot molten chocolate dumplings at Rickshaw
at the Flatiron District.
My sister and I went to our cousin's little three year old's birthday party.  Yes, a room full of more that twenty toddlers running and jumping around!! After and hour and a half, I was pretty exhausted.  They are balls of cuteness and lots of energy.  Phew!  It's not a party without favors, right?  I HAD to make favors for this party... ok, I didn't have to.  However, since I started this tradition last year, I had to do it again this year!
This was last year's owl favor for little Maya.
Since this year's party was a science theme,
I thought beaker softies would be the perfect addition to the goodie bags!
My weekend ended with some shopping, and an early dinner with the husband.
Fried banana wontons for dessert!
Then, finally since we had a wonderful meal and a decadently sinful dessert....
we ended the day by joining a new gym!  How was your weekend?
