Beetle Derby Hat

It's that time of the year again.  My work had their yearly fundraising event last week.  There was a fake horse race, fake money, and fake bets...and derby hats.  I wasn't planning on making one at all this year because it was a very busy week.  At the very last minute (the day before) I decided to make this Volkswagon Beetle hat for someone who loves it so much that their office is has anything and everything Volkswagen.

My hat was a crowd favorite again this year, and won the prize for best women's hat.
I'm not sure which one I like better; this year or last year's hat.

Under The Sea Hats

This is what happens when someone needs sea creature hats.
Mixing different textures and materials can be fun to get the full effect.
Sometimes thinking out of the box is necessary.
Sea Anemone Hat: Crocheted cap and attached tentacles made of wiry material.
Sea Urchin Hat: Crocheted cap with spikes made of foam sheets.
Barnacle Hat: Plastic top hat covered with fan folded paper and speckled with gold and silver paint.

My Titanic Hat on CRAFT!

Seriously.  I just want to say how excited I am that my Titanic derby hat which I posted last week was featured in CRAFT!  I love thinking up of things in my head and I get so ecstatic when everything comes together and what I've imagined really happens.  I especially love when people appreciate what I create.   This is why I love making things because there's no limit.  This is why I blog because I get to share what I like to do.  I am so thankful to Haley from The Zen of Making who is a super crafter herself [she has so many tutorials and craft wisdom for all levels of craftiness], for writing such a great article.  She really did make my week.
Thanks a million Haley and CRAFT!

Titanic Derby Hat

Last Friday marked the 100th anniversary of the Titanic.  It was also the day of a work fundraiser where I volunteered.  It's usually a big to-do where there's a fake horse race, similar to the Kentucky Derby.  Therefore, there were derby hats!! This was a very last minute creation.  I worked on it the night before with some old manila folders, foam sheets, and lots of hot glue.  It's not permanently attached on the wool hat, but there's a hole on the bottom of the boat where it fits snugly on top.  This opening is also where the lights inside the boat can be turned on and off.  Yes folks, working lights!! Ta da!  Needless to say this hat won best in show!

Show Your Pride

There's a big boxing fight on tonight.  I'm not usually a regular viewer of the sport.  I only watch it when Manny Pacquiao goes on the ring.  In the spirit of tonight's big match against Juan Marquez III I've made a special earflap hat.

Let's get ready to rumble!
